We built a bold civic brand designed to make human rights feel visible, immediate, and unmistakably New York.

The New York City Commission on Human Rights needed an identity that could carry the weight of its mission while speaking clearly to one of the most diverse cities in the world. We created a complete visual system built around accessibility, inclusion, and public recognition, giving the Commission a stronger, more contemporary presence across communications, campaigns, social, and community-facing materials.

The Challenge

A public institution with an expansive mandate needed a brand system people could recognize, understand, and trust.

The Commission serves New Yorkers across employment, housing, public accommodations, immigration status, gender identity, disability, and other protected areas under the City’s Human Rights Law. The challenge was to create an identity that could communicate that breadth without becoming institutional or abstract, while remaining inclusive, accessible, and credible across a highly diverse public audience.

The Solution

We translated a complex civic mission into a clear, flexible visual system built for public use.

The identity was developed as a complete communication system, not a standalone mark. Logo, typography, color, graphic language, presentation tools, and social templates were designed to work consistently across campaigns, education, outreach, and everyday Commission communications, giving the brand clarity at every scale and across every audience.

The Insight

The more diverse the audience, the more disciplined the system had to become.

Designing for all New Yorkers meant creating enough flexibility to reflect different communities without fragmenting the brand. The system had to be expressive without becoming inconsistent, accessible without feeling generic, and recognizable enough to carry one clear institutional voice across a wide range of public-facing messages.

The Outcome

A civic identity built to show up clearly wherever New Yorkers encounter it.

The new system gave the Commission a more recognizable, contemporary, and consistent public presence across campaigns, education, outreach, presentations, and social communications. It created a stronger visual foundation for one of the nation’s most comprehensive human rights laws, helping the Commission communicate with greater clarity while remaining flexible enough to serve the city’s many communities.
